How are Natural and Synthetic Diamonds formed?

Natural diamonds are formed 200km (124 miles) below the earth’s surface. Down their temperatures reach 1600°C and the pressure reaches between 45 to 60 kilobars which is 50,000 more than at the earth’s surface. These are the conditions that should be met to form a diamond. The chemical formation procedure is the following: at such intense temperature and pressure, one carbon atom bonds with 4 other carbon atoms making a diamond. Most of the natural diamonds were formed 1-3 billion years ago way before the human race.

Synthetic diamonds are lab-grown. Scientists have found a way to maintain the right temperature and pressure to form diamonds. This process is called HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature). It usually takes 2-4 weeks to create a synthetic diamond. With the naked eye, you can’t tell the difference between a natural diamond and a synthetic diamond. Though lab-grown diamonds cost 60% less than natural diamonds.
